Junior DevOps Engineer

Perfect opportunity for a new starter to DevOps looking to build their career View all jobs

Role description

We build intricate serverless applications using state of the art technologies, and we’re looking for someone to help our development teams get the most from cloud services. We will provide training in software development, devops, operations, systems architecture and cloud systems management.

We're building for the future

We’re actively creating a diverse team and we welcome applications from all people, regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, gender identity or expression (or indeed any other characteristic whether protected by law or not). We want ours to be a truly inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential.

At the core of the role is a genuine desire to build and operate high quality systems. You will probably have a degree or equivalent, perhaps hands-on experience in a support role or perhaps you’ll have undertaken some vocational training (self–directed or bootcamp).

We use Typescript and the AWS Cloud Development Kit to automate all infrastructure and deployment, but don’t need to have worked with these tools before. Often you'll be automating against third-party APIs, or writing instrumentation against Kubernetes endpoints, or writing automated recovery or deployment code.

This is a software development role, even though it concentrates on operations as a domain, and you will be expected to be able to write high-quality software. Although the software the devops team produce is often not algorithmically complex, it does exhibit all of the challenges that software can present.

We provide hands-on training during your first year which will include joining software teams and writing real production code, so you will need to enjoy writing code and be confident in your ability to improve as a developer.

You will be working with both internal and external teams of developers and managers and you will be providing advice, code, and support to everyone on projects, sometimes of an architectural nature. A willingness to experiment is important and a desire to remain current in areas such as identity, cloud security, performance and quality is a must.

The role is based in our York office, right in the heart of the beautiful city of York.

Responsibilities

These are the sorts of things you’ll be doing. We’re all always learning, so don’t worry if some of these things are new to you; comprehensive training and support are provided to help you grow into the developer you want to become.

  • - Work with small to medium sized teams on projects running anywhere from three months to two years
  • - Actively engage with customers and colleagues, including helping design their solutions
  • - Use modern tools to build infrastructure and continuous delivery pipelines
  • - Configuring and tuning telemetry systems
  • - Responding to automated alerts, handling customer incidents and solving customer problems across a wide range of production and pre-production environments

The devops team are responsible for handling events and incidents during office hours. Occasionally out of hours work is required for high risk changes during quieter periods, but we can generally pick the window. We do not expect more than 37.5 hours worked per week.

Development path

You’ll be working alongside our management team; people with decades of experience who want to share that experience with you. As your career progresses we’ll help you decide where to specialise, and support that specialisation.

We love to see our team members grow. As well as asking you to help your colleagues we’ll actively support your growth into areas such as team leadership, requirements capture, cloud technologies, Kubernetes, functional programming, machine learning, application performance and application security. And throughout your time with us you’ll be using a huge range of tools from relational databases and queuing systems right through to real time stream processing.

And the huge variety of work we do means you’ll never get bored. In the last few years we’ve worked on everything from karaoke to ship–broking, from video–mixing to teaching doctors. Take a look at our work page to see some recent projects.

We’re proud of the careers we’ve helped progress; people go on to great things after they’ve worked for Isotoma. Recent Isotoma alumni have gone from us straight to Rockstar Games, Apple Music, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, Google, Zoopla, JP Morgan and Raspberry Pi.

Benefits

Salary upwards from £24.5k to £30k depending on your experience and qualifications. We offer flexible working hours to suit your life outside work (and they’re capped at 37.5 hours a week; we don’t do overtime), generous holidays, a hefty contribution to your pension and private healthcare.
