Junior Developer

Fantastic opportunity for someone looking to take their development career forward into building state of the art applications View all jobs

Role description

We’ll provide comprehensive on the job training and mentorship in industry standard tools such as AWS and React, and you’ll be working in small, agile, highly collaborative teams with colleagues who want to help you succeed.

We're building for the future

We’re actively creating a diverse team and we welcome applications from all people, regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, gender identity or expression (or indeed any other characteristic whether protected by law or not). We want ours to be a truly inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We encourage those considering a career change; junior means experience, not necessarily years.

At the core of the role is a fascination with the web. You’ll probably have a degree, or you’ll have undertaken some vocational training as a developer (self–directed or bootcamp). You might well have tinkered with HTML, CSS and Javascript, and even PHP, Python or Javascript for server side coding.

You may be a beginner, but you’re eager to learn and keen to see your work helping real people. We create intricate, beautiful customer facing applications that are used by hundreds of thousands of people every day, so your work will be used by real people in real situations immediately!

The role is based in our York office, right in the heart of the beautiful city of York.

We work in a hybrid manner, with most — but not all — of the team in the office anywhere from 1 day a week to full time. We’ll support your preferred way of working, but as this is a junior role we expect you’ll benefit from being in the office at least once a week for meetings with the team and with customers.

Responsibilities

These are the sorts of things you’ll be doing. It’s OK if you feel your experience isn’t quite there yet; comprehensive training and support will be provided throughout. We aren’t expecting you to be fully formed, but we want to help you get there.

  • - Use modern Javascript and TypeScript client–side and server–side to build rich serverless applications
  • - Use React to create intricate user experiences
  • - Work with Python and Django to build traditional web applications
  • - Use Amazon Web Services to design, deploy and host the applications you build
  • - Use tools like GitHub, JIRA and CircleCI to support the development process

Development path

We match our junior developers one to one with senior developers; you’ll be working closely with people with decades of experience who want to share that experience with you. As your career progresses we’ll help you decide where to specialise, and support that specialisation.

We’d love to see you grow into the developer you know you can be. We’re eager to share our knowledge and experience with you, and firmly believe there’s no such thing as a stupid question. We’ll actively support your growth into areas such as AWS Certification, functional programming, application performance and application security. And throughout your time with us we’ll introduce you to a huge range of tools from relational databases and queuing systems right through to real time stream processing.

And the huge variety of work we do means you’ll never get bored. In the last few years we’ve worked on everything from karaoke to ship–broking, from video–mixing to teaching doctors. Take a look at our work page to see some recent projects.

We’re proud of the careers we’ve helped start; people go on to great things after they’ve worked for Isotoma. Recent Isotoma alumni have gone from us straight to Rockstar Games, Apple Music, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, Google, Zoopla, JP Morgan and Raspberry Pi.

Benefits

Salary from £24.5k to £30k depending on experience and qualifications. We offer flexible working hours to suit your life outside work (and they’re capped at 37.5 hours a week; we don’t do overtime), generous holidays, a hefty contribution to your pension and private healthcare.
