We’ll provide a wide range of formal and on the job training and mentorship, allowing you to develop your skills in areas such as team leadership, AWS, React, Node.js, machine learning and functional programming.
Salary: | £42k and up |

Holiday: | 27 days |

We’re actively creating a diverse team and we welcome applications from all people, regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, gender identity or expression (or indeed any other characteristic whether protected by law or not). We want ours to be a truly inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential.
At the core of the role is a fascination with the web. You’ll have at least five years experience in a professional programming role, and might well have a degree or other formal training. Ideally you’ll have some team leadership experience; if not, you’ll definitely be eager to start gaining some.
We primarily use Javascript, Typescript and Python, but we’re keen to hear from people with any background (be it Java, PHP, C# or anything else) as long as you’re excited by working with the technologies we focus on.
We create intricate, beautiful customer facing applications that are used by hundreds of thousands of people every day, so your work will be used by real people in real situations immediately! And you’ll be working in small, agile, highly collaborative teams with colleagues who want to help you succeed.
The role is based in our York office, right in the heart of the beautiful city of York.
Obviously right now, because of all … you know, this … we’re working remotely, but our goal is return to the office — at least in some form — whenever good sense allows.
Responsibilities
These are the sorts of things you’ll be doing. We’re all always learning, so don’t worry if some of these things are new to you; comprehensive training and support are provided to help you grow into the developer you want to become.
- Lead small to medium sized teams on projects running anywere from three to twelve months
- Actively engage with your customers, including helping define their requirements and design their solutions
- Help our Junior Developers and Developers improve
- Use modern Javascript (ES6) client–side and server–side to build rich serverless applications
- Use React and Redux to create intricate user experiences
- Work with Python and Django to build traditional web applications
- Use Amazon Web Services to design, deploy and host the applications you build
- Use tools like GitHub, JIRA and CircleCI to support the development process
Development path
You’ll be working alongside our management team; people with decades of experience who want to share that experience with you. As your career progresses we’ll help you decide where to specialise, and support that specialisation.
We love to see our team members grow. As well as asking you to help your colleagues we’ll actively support your growth into areas such as team leadership, SCRUM, requirements capture, AWS Certification, functional programming, machine learning, application performance and application security. And throughout your time with us you’ll be using a huge range of tools from relational databases and queuing systems right through to real time stream processing.
And the huge variety of work we do means you’ll never get bored. In the last few years we’ve worked on everything from karaoke to ship–broking, from video–mixing to teaching doctors. Take a look at our work page to see some recent projects.
We’re proud of the careers we’ve helped progress; people go on to great things after they’ve worked for Isotoma. Recent Isotoma alumni have gone from us straight to Rockstar Games, Apple Music, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, Google, Zoopla, JP Morgan and Raspberry Pi.
Benefits
Salary upwards from £42k depending on your experience. We offer flexible working hours to suit your life outside work (and they’re capped at 37.5 hours a week; we don’t do overtime), generous holidays, a hefty contribution to your pension and private healthcare.
