Project Office/Junior Project Manager

No experience required View all jobs

This is the perfect opportunity for someone looking to start their project management career, working with experienced project managers as well as expert architects, developers, and test analysts in building intricate front– and back–end applications using state of the art technologies. We’ll provide a wide range of formal and on the job training and mentorship, allowing you to develop your skills as a project manager across a variety of projects of different sizes and technologies.

We’re actively creating a diverse team and we welcome applications from all people, regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, gender identity or expression (or indeed any other characteristic whether protected by law or not). We want ours to be a truly inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential.

A fascination with the web is at the core of everything we do. We don’t expect software project management experience for this role, but you’ll definitely need to be curious about how software gets made. And you’ll need to be organised, and enjoy helping organise others. We’ll provide a range of formal and on the job training to help you develop as a project manager, and we’ll introduce you to project management methodologies such as SCRUM and Kanban (and even — very occasionally — the dreaded Waterfall!), as well as standards such as ISO27001, ISO9000 and CyberEssentials Plus.

We create intricate, beautiful customer facing applications that are used by hundreds of thousands of people every day, so the projects you work on will be used by real people in real situations immediately! And you’ll be working across a number of small, agile, highly collaborative teams with colleagues who want to help you succeed.

The role is based in our York office, right in the heart of the beautiful city of York.

As things return to "normal" we’re working in a hybrid manner, with most — but not all — of the team in the office anywhere from 1 day a week to full time. We’ll support your preferred way of working, but at certain stages of the project lifecycle will expect someone in this role to be in the office at least once a week for meetings with the team and with customers.

These are the sorts of things you’ll be doing. We’re all always learning, so don’t worry if some of these things are new to you; comprehensive training and support are provided to help you grow and develop.

  • Support Project Managers in running a small number of projects simultaneously, ranging from £50,000 to £500,000 and from three to eighteen months in length
  • Run multiple small projects of your own, with support from Lead Developers and Project Managers
  • Report to both the customer and the Isotoma management team on the progress of your projects
  • Use tools like GitHub, JIRA and Confluence to coordinate your projects
  • Assist in maintaining our internal documentation and standards

Development path

You’ll be working alongside our senior developers, management team and Project Director; people with decades of experience who want to share that experience with you and help you learn and grow. We’ll provide formal training where appropriate, and provide lots of opportunities for informal learning, too.

And the huge variety of work we do means you’ll never get bored. In the last few years we’ve worked on everything from karaoke to ship–broking, from video–mixing to teaching doctors. Take a look at our work page to see some recent projects.

We’re proud of the careers we’ve helped progress; people go on to great things after they’ve worked for Isotoma. Recent Isotoma alumni have gone from us straight to Rockstar Games, Apple Music, BBC iPlayer, BBC News, Google, Zoopla, JP Morgan and Raspberry Pi.

Salary from £22k to £30k depending on experience. We offer flexible working hours to suit your life outside work (and they’re capped at 37.5 hours a week; we don’t do overtime), generous holidays, a hefty contribution to your pension and private healthcare.

As the pandemic recedes (we hope!) we’re starting to travel again, and the role will require occasional travel (by train, first class), sometimes outside your normal working hours. We’ll make every accommodation to ensure this fits your other commitments.
